Day 1: Sunflower Community Garden
Early in the spring of March 2009, Dan and Suzy Daley implemented the wonderful garden behind Grounds for Coffee on 30th and Harrison in the elevated Ogden, Utah.
The Following Weeks
What started as a humble endeavor quickly blossomed into a vibrant hub for our community. Sunflower Community Garden became more than just a patch of greenery; it became a place for our community to gather and grow. Hosting plant sales, sharing our love for plants and gardening, and providing space for planting the seeds of friendship and community.
The Following Years
With each passing year, the roots of Sunflower Community Garden grew deeper, nourished by the dedication and passion of volunteers and community members. The baristas of Grounds for Coffee and other locals generously volunteered their time and energy to nurture the garden, fostering a sense of belonging and stewardship among the community.
In 2020, the world faced unprecedented challenges with the onset of the pandemic. Like many community spaces, Sunflower Community Garden felt the impact. Restrictions and safety concerns altered the dynamics of how we interacted and cared for our garden. Yet, even in the face of adversity, our commitment to nurturing the garden and our community never wavered.
Changing Times
Over time, as with any living organism, the garden faced its share of challenges. Some boxes started to show signs of wear and tear, while others had completely rotted away. Pipes sprouted leaks, and broken sprinklers flooded plots. Despite these setbacks, the community's spirit remained undaunted.
Restoration with I AM Botanicals
In collaboration with I AM Botanicals, Sunflower Community Garden embarked on a journey of restoration and renewal. Plots were assessed with care, rotting wood was removed, and some boxes were rebuilt using salvaged materials. The water system underwent some renovations, and leaks were addressed. Together, Sunflower Community Garden and I AM Botanicals forged ahead, celebrating milestones of progress and growth.
As we look to the future, there's no shortage of dreams and aspirations for Sunflower Community Garden. From expanding our educational programs to fostering even stronger community ties, every season brings new opportunities to cultivate beauty, connection, and abundance in our shared space.
